Tricky parking made easy with Active Park Assist Active Park Assist not only finds the right space for you – it will actually perform a semi-automatic parallel parking manoeuvre. It uses a series of body-mounted sensors, so the driver only has to press the accelerator, shift gears or brake – the steering is all done for you! Audible warnings and information displayed on the centre console's screen guide the driver until the parking manoeuvre has been successfully completed. Available as an option on both the new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX. Safer overtaking with the Blind Spot Information System Available as an option on both the new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX, the system is designed to make longer journeys a more relaxing experience, particularly on motorways. Rear body-mounted sensors cover the crucial areas known as blind spots. Discreet warning lamps in both door mirrors warn you when a vehicle is in either zone. The Sony DAB Navigation system's rear-view camera can help you, by displaying a grid view from the rear of the vehicle on the screen of the premium navigation system. This makes it easier and safer to park. The rear-view camera is especially useful when you’re reversing to hook up to a trailer or caravan EcoBoost petrol engines The new C-MAX is among the first to offer the new 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine. The responsive performance of a large capacity engine, combined with the size, weight and fuel economy of a much smaller unit, means a more exhilarating driving experience with a lower impact on the environment. The next generation Duratorq TDCi diesel engines Award-winning TDCi Duratorq diesel engines have also been upgraded, achieving significant improvements in CO2 emissions, helped by the additive and maintenance-free Diesel Particulate Filter. Available in a 140 PS version, delivering improvements of up to 10% in fuel economy in addition to advances in power, performance and quieter running. Smoother, fuel-saving gear shifts with PowerShift automatic transmission The new C-MAX will also feature the option of Ford’s latest high efficiency PowerShift, six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. It delivers a seamless driving experience, which can also improve fuel economy by up to 10%, when compared to a conventional automatic transmission system. You'll also enjoy lightning-fast gear changes without any loss in the flow of power. And if you want more involvement, manual mode lets you change gear with just a flick of the gearshift. Hill Launch Assist The new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX also makes tricky hill starts a thing of the past with Hill Launch Assist, which keeps the wheels locked until you apply the accelerator (only available with ESP). Torque vectoring control Fitted as standard, the system balances engine torque between the front wheels to suit the road surface driving conditions. The result? More grip, more precise handling and greater control – even on low grip or wet surfaces. The biggest change sees the new car now offered as a seven-seater in the form of the Grand C-Max. Ford C-Max gallery: This has enabled the standard C-Max to develop a much sportier look as it caters for people who like the Focus but want a bit more space. The C-Max has been designed to fit in with Ford’s current look, one which can already be seen on UK roads in the shape of the new Fiesta and Mondeo . Hallmarked by a big four-sided grille and a more dynamic appearance, the overall package is an evolution of Ford’s “kinetic design” which ensures the new C-Max has a far less conservative appearance than its predecessor. This is partly thanks to what Ford describes as a coupe-style finish to the rear, which makes it look more hatchback than people carrier. Still a practical choice The new model has remained more or less the same size, though for those looking for a bigger Focus (the C-max shares its foundations) this still means plenty of room. During Auto Trader’s first test in Nice, France, one 6ft 5in test driver had ample room, and there’s 471 litres of boot space with all seats in place. One, two or three of the rear seats can be folded and the entire row is easily tipped to create the 1,723 litres of load space available in two-seater mode. The rear seats don’t fold flat, but even so it’s possible to generate a decent-sized cavern for those needing to shift sizeable amounts of stuff as well as people. It’s also possible to easily change the five seat configuration to four by folding away the centre seat and moving the outer two diagonally backwards and inwards to create more space for two rear-seat passengers. All change inside The modernising treatment has taken place inside the car too with more of a cockpit feel for front occupants. The new interior is well-thought through, with a high driving position, as is the gear stick which sits close to the central console. The front door pockets, glove box and cup holders provide plenty of useful storage solutions. New EcoBoost technology The new C-Max will have three petrol and two diesel engines. The 1.6-litre petrol engine is to be offered with 105bhp, 125bhp and 150bhp power outputs, while the diesel line-up of a 1.6- or 2-litre diesel engine, will produce 115 and 140bhp respectively. The 150bhp petrol engine comes courtesy of Ford’s new EcoBoost technology aimed at delivering better performance while reducing CO2 emissions (and therefore tax bills) as well as increasing fuel returns. Driving improvements We drove the high-powered petrol engine on our test route in the south of France and were impressed by its ability to deliver power and acceleration at higher speeds. The previous C-Max has earned a reputation as a car which is fun to drive and Ford have introduced new technology to take that a little further through more precise steering and enhanced cornering stability. Torque vectoring control might be a bit of a mouthful but essentially it sees more power directed to the wheels on the outside of the corner in a sharp bend, improving agility and reducing understeer. The chassis and body shell have also been stiffened to reduce body roll. New features The introduction of new technology is not limited to the driving dynamics. The new Active Park Assist feature can take the pain out of parking by first scanning for suitable parallel parking spaces at speeds of up to 19mph, sounding a chime to indicate one has been found, and automatically steering the vehicle into the selected spot with the driver controlling the accelerator and gearbox. Plus a new blind spot information system triggers a light in the wing mirror to alert the driver to cars which he or she may not be able to see. The Ford team has also aimed to improve the car’s refinement by a raft of measures aimed at reducing road, wind and engine noise and vibration which include simply making the diesel engines offered quieter than the ones in the outgoing car. Titanium or Zetec Two trim levels will be available for the C-Max when it goes on sale in October: top-of-the-range Titanium and Zetec. Zetec standard equipment will include: 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, leather steering wheel, DAB radio and a USB connection. Titanium buyers will get 17-inch alloy wheels, premium Sony radio and automatic windscreen wipers and headlamps. Sat-nav and 18-inch wheels can be specified as individual options while others can be specified as component parts of six different accessory packs. A raft of safety equipment sees Ford confident of achieving a five-star EuroNCAP crash rating when the car is submitted for testing. Prices for the new Ford C-Max at launch will also be on a par with, or less than those of its predecessor.
