| hi and welcome to the auction for my 2.8i special capri, i bought the car 7 years ago to restore and keep, it took me 4 years to totaly rebuild the...>
car from start to finish and some people say its concourse judge for yourself, | i lost count on how much i spent on this restoration but no expense was spared as you can see. every nut bolt and washer was replaced for stainless steel and the complete car was poly bushed. | every part of metal work like exauhst brackets and engine components were either polished or powder coated. the engine ,gearbox and diff was removed when i got the car home and the bodywork was stripped to the metal, | there was absolutly no welding or corrosion what so ever no the shell, it was fully resprayed top and bottom and engine bay. | the work done to the running gear was as follows, engine rebore,new pistons and rings polished crankshaft new big ends new camshaft, new waterpump, unleaded heads, chrome polished rocker covers, chrome polished sump. | polished plenum chamber and all components on the plenum chamber are polished,reconed alternator, new clutch fitted, | the gearbox got a full recondition aswell as the limited slip diff, theres that much stuff on this side of the restoration i just cannot remember everything but everypart as i said was replaced for new. | the anti roll bars back and front were bead blasted and powder coated the bottom arms were brand new and it took almost 2 years to find a original brand new stearing rack. the radiator was good so it was stripped and polished and looks briliant. | the petrol tank was blasted and repainted with anti corosion paint, the tank straps were new but i had them powder coated and the tank strap conection bolts are new. | the exausts are new janspeeds and sound the business, all the braking system was upgraided as you can see some the photo it has ventted cosworth discs and calipers on the front and brand new drums,shoes,springs and hand brake cables are brand new, all brake lines were new copper and braided steel flexi hoses . the front struts were new as was the rear shocks, the rear springs were powdercoated black and lowered blocks were fitted to bring the height down. | you can see in photo 6 the underside of the body work before paint and i couldnt beleive it myself when i degreased it to leave this original factory finish. | the interior is exceptional, has to ripps but does have a little wear on the front seat bolsters, this can be expected and adds to the originality of the car, when you open the door it still has the leather smell from the interior even after this lenghth of time. | the dash has no cracks! | the car is sitting on new rubber and 17" alloy wheels the front wings were altered to take the 17" wheels so no rubbing . | the headlining is mint and sunroof works in both modes tilt and slide. | if you find iam jumping from one part to another its because i keep remembering other things i have done! | the outside paint work is imaculate except for a small scratch on the top of wing where my son hit it with his bike! it hasnt broken the paint but wont polish out, the bumpers are new and the end caps also new 3 years ago when i was just about finished the restoration, | pictures dont do this car justice and anyone intrested in buying the car is more than welcome to come and have a good inspection of the car i have absolutly no problem with any expert also inspecting the car. | the car is currently on a sorn with no mot but i can put a years mot on it if the buyer wishes, as you can imagine its not going to fail an mot! ,its a new car!! | iam sure i have forgot lots of things ive done but will answer any questions anybody has , | this will break my heart to sell and almost sold the car 3 years ago but just couldnt part with it, now after long agonising thought i need to move on to other things, | there is only a handfull of capris left in the uk and europe in the condition this car is in but dont have to take my word for it come have a look before you bid!! | i had the car at one car show in 2008 but this type of event didnt intrest me so i didnt enter any more. | someone will be the proud owner of this car and wont be disapointed, thanks for looking! the car has to be sold but wont be givin away so the reserve is set but may remove the listing to auction at a classic auction next month. i can also be contacted on 07585802564, (stevie) | X

exhasystem including manifold. Rear springs fitted with 2" lowering blocks and 145lb lowered springs at front. There is the original laser alloys with good (plenty tread) 185/70x13 tyres fitted to go with the car however it is fitted with 15" peugeot 406 steel wheels and 195/50x15 tyres. This makes the car a lot better to drive compared with the 13" wheels. The car was nimbus grey before the previous owner attacked it with matt black paint which is not to everyones taste ! I bought this with the intention of using the engine for a mk2 escort van I had at the time and was planning on fitting a bmw v8 to the Capri however as is often the case there has now been a change of plan as I am currently setting up a new business so rather than it sit and rust away I would rather see it used. I actually ran it for just over a year before taking it off the road just under a year ago. I have had two 2.8 capri`s and a 3.0 in the past and I did not expect this to be much fun compared to the v6 versions but I found that it is quick enough to have some fun especially from a standing start (full revs tyre smoke and lots of intake noise from the carbs) or in the wet on roundabouts. The car is basically pretty solid in the important places but has the usual small patches of rust developing. The car is not currently moted but before the end of auction I will list what I think it will require (I am a qualified mot tester) for its mot or if I have time I will mot it. In my opinion the car is potentially a great project as it is very solid for a capri this age, as far as I was lead to believe it has spent most of its life in the south of England so no excessive exposure to salt in winter ! Alternatively you could just run it as is with the "Rat look", if you find it too embarrassing this is where the heavy tint on the windows is a benefit although I did remove the tint from the rear window to make it possible to see what was behind you at night ? X

very nice clean condition with beautiful black paintwork that polishes up exceptionally well. There is no major rust on either the bodywork or chassis. and tax ran out november 2011 and is currently sorn, I bought last year as a project as like my old fords and it was local to me nr colchester, it was still motd and taxed when I bought but very short, the car runs and drives and starts straight away, the car is completely standard in looks even down to the genuine 13" steel wheels with inner crome trims, also comes with the original dark brown interior which is again in very good condition for age the only thing that isnt standard is the steering wheel, all welding was done for mot last year mainly both front inner arches which Im told is quite common, the car is quite straight for a over 31 year old car but being white shows everything, my plan was to get the car painted to make it really clean as the black vinyl roof is in excellent order the only place that needs serious attention is the along the wings both sides the bits you cant see when bonnet is down the main structure is sound its where the wings attach to the top of inner wings under engine compartment, now when I bought the car the previous keeper said he had just done the head gasket, but he hadnt changed oil as filter was quite old and the oil was mixed so I changed oil and filter and topped up with fresh oil but its still seems to be mixing I reakon the headbolts need tightning as I no your supposed to tighten then run for a bit then retighten on these old pinto engines once headgaskets are done, this car has great potential and is in my eyes a very easy project but due to a few bits on body work and oil mixing I must sell as spares or repair I no this sounds like its a load of rubbish but it isnt, Im only selling as I no I wont get round to finishing any time soon, its far to good to break I have got the means of doing this but it definately needs doing up ive had people ask me for the wheels and rear axle but wont break, I always list as things are as dont want to waste anyones time but this capri isnt a bad one, also I can deliver at cost, I do like capris but im more of a mk1/2 granada man, the pictures will be up as soon as this snow goes, Ive also got two sets of 13" cross spoke ford alloys and also a boot spolier which I have for sale but dont go with car thankyou. | On 05-Feb-12 at 23:23:46 GMT, seller added the following information: | just to add the capri is a mk3 model on a 1980 W | X

now i dont have the funds to carry on, the owner before me made a good start with the underneath hasnt had much welding but what it has is to a very high standerd the underneath is in very good condition. i have replaced the exhaust with a full magnex setup sounds very nice and i have replaced all the brakes including on the front brand new calipers discs and pads the outside and interior is untouched apart from the previous owner has had a new rear arch put on it which is to a high standerd but in and ouside will need attenion to tidy it up. the power steering has stopped working i think one of the pipes may have a leak. this wouldnt need alot doing to it to get it through an mot just little bits but it would be a great prodject. this is a very honest car being 27 years old it will need work. it has also had a new waterpump and thermostat cash on collection thanks for looking X

Inspired by the success of the Mustang `pony car` in the USA, Ford introduced the Capri - `The car you`ve always promised yourself` - to the European market in 1968. Towards the end of 1973 it was decided to develop a high-performance `RS` Capri for the UK market using an over-bored version of the Dagenham-built 3.0-litre V6 engine. Enlarged to 3,091cc and treated to a mild porting job, this unit produced 148bhp, which was good enough for a top speed of 124mph with 60mph coming up in around 7 seconds. Matt black bumpers, AVO-type alloy wheels, `racing` stripes and a boot spoiler made the RS easily distinguishable from the Capri GT on which it was based, while beneath the skin the RS2600-type suspension had been softened somewhat to improve the ride quality. RS3100 production began in November 1973 and ceased in February 1974 when the Capri MkII was announced. Today this rare model is one of the most highly sought after of all sporting Fords. The previous owner and restorer of the car is well know cutomsiser, Andy Saunders, when he was a child his father sold Fords during the Escort Mk1 and Capri era. Immediately after his father`s death in 2008, the previous owner bought this Capri 3000GT to restore in his honour. The floor pans and chassis were perfect so it seemed an ideal candidate for such a project. A local Bournemouth car, `TRU 595J` might well have been owned and sold by his father. It was decided to restore the Capri in the style of its ultimate incarnation - the 3100RS - stripping the bodyshell back to bare metal and repainting it in Ford Sebring Red with correct black bonnet. The engine is a new 3100RS Stage 4 unit that has had only 200 miles put on its bores since the restoration`s completion in 2009. A Janspeed exhaust is currently fitted. unbelievabley solid, still has its original wings, sills, rear wheelarch`s, chassis no still stamped in the floor, no rust anywhere. inner wings, a/posts all rock solid, only ever had two small patches on the o/s rear spring hanger (to a good standard) it has been painted sometime in its life, a few blemishes here and there (nothing major) but NO ROT. a very well presented car. viewing highly recomended. the interior has at some point in its life been fitted with 2.8 special half leather seats, usual wear on the drivers seat bolster and cracked dash, headlining is in very good condition apart from the sunroof panel is torn, sony cd player. mechanically brilliant, very strong engine, doesn`t smoke or rattle. puts a smile on my face every time i drive it. viewing recomended. full bronze glass with all etched windows, brand new windscreen with blue top tint. unfortunately no history. hpi clear. overall a very good looking rot free capri, a true classic to use daily or could be a ideal base for a show car. any qustions feel free to ask e/mail or 07795260792 texts and withheld numbers will be ignored. as always viewing highly recomended. Just had valve clearences adjusted at garage so she sounds nice 4. brakes are really responsive for classic as its disks on front :) 5. Brand new radiator and cooling system 6. new distributer contact points and condenser Service History: 1. massive amount of paperwork and service history as the elderly gent who owned it from new was very meticulous in servicing and organisation. 2. almost every mot dating back to the first 3. 2 sets of keys 4. original part of V5 from new 5. original letter for changing plate to custom plate 6. all the original manuals for the sterio, owners and even service with the service stamps in it! 7. Only TWO previous OWNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8. am away to change oil to 5W30 Castrol Magnetic (best a capri can get) and treat her to a new oil fiter and drain plug on return from being offshore. Ergonomics: 1. Very comfy recaro style seats and padded leather door trim is perfect height for arm rest while driving 2. good head room and length for long legs or just adjust seat for shorter 3. when the back seats are folded down then there is room to put and inflatable bed in back and sleep in comfort providing your less than 6.2 feet as i have done on many a night while my mates shiver in there leaky tents haha :) Style: 1. now this is where the capri really shines as it is very stylish Retro car with the sporty shape and aggressive bonnet, who could ask for more? 2. Full Kat Body kit which really gives it a Harder, angrier, take no SH*T look! 3. Bad Ass Rebel Custom Matt Black paint looks sweet but by no means perfect as there is scratches, here and there. bits of paint chipped off the bodykit but as a whole the defects just make it look more beat street! 4. Snarling Roar when the pedal is depressed 5. Laser alloys instead of steelies 6. custom window Louvres make it look like the BatMobile :) 7. Custom Liscence Plate B521 KUX (like the B52 Bomber plane) 8. Has very Cool Alarm system with a wireless key fob to arm & disarm it, ahh yeah! Overview: 1. Very Cheap insurance especially for young lad who wants a first car, approx same as 1.4 corsa and hell of allot cheaper then 1.8 corsa and thats declaring all the capris MODS! 2. very good daily runner being a 1.6 so its cheap to run 3. great service history so it shouldnt have any scAry surprises 4. Taxed and Mot`d so its ready to just drive away!!! (can stick on 12 months Mot if winning buyer requests at small cost) 5. Cool stylish Retro car for a very reasonable price 6. wont get a better Capri for under 2K 7. bought as seen and a 200 pound non returnable deposit is required within 48 hrs of auction end 8. can send more pics and viewings welcome after 12/2/12 once i arrive back from work offshore presuming im not kept back an extra week here. 9. can deliver most places in scotland at 1pound a mile as long as travel costs are payed before departure. The car is currently without MOT or Tax as been sorn for a number of years. The Last time the car was used was aproximately 4 years ago, it ran a dream back then. The car my mate believes to need a new radiator as the water leaks out when running at lower side, and the battery may need replacement as not ran for that amount of time(may charge but dont know). Owned and garaged since 1999 we bought this car in physcally excellent condition but in a mechanically sorry state. We had a new clutch, the brake system (master cylinder, discs, pads, Calipers, Shoes & pipes) all fitted before taking her for what was her last passed MOT back in 2000. We drove her into our garage with the intention of dealing with a minor rusty patch on the o/s seal and replacing the track rod ends, put her on axle stands, covered her in a dust sheet and there she`s sat for 12 years. During this time, a shelf fell off the wall fully loaded with motor spares and dented the n/s wing. The clutch and brakes are siezed and the engine, although turns over freely, will only run with petrol in the carb. We consider this a light restoration and wouldn`t be at all supprised if someone with even basic mechanical ability has her up and running in no time. Sadly, no time is all we have for her hence she has to go as we need the space... The Ford Classic was a result of 4 years of development. Approval for the project was given in autumn 1956. The styling of the car was the last project undertaken by Colin Neale before he left Dagenham for Dearborn. The initial design requirement was for the Ford Classic to be a full range model to take Ford into the new decade. Ford even developed a full-size estate (station wagon) prototype. The Capri Project was code named "Sunbird" and took design elements from the Ford Thunderbird and the Ford Galaxie Sunliner. It was instigated by Sir Horace Denne, Ford's Sales Director. He wanted a "co-respondent's" car to add glamour to the product line. It was designed by Charles Thompson who worked under Neale and had sweeping lines, a large boot space and a pillarless coupé roof. On its September announcement the Consul Capri was for export only but went on sale to the domestic British market in January 1962. The bodies were sub-assembled by Pressed Steel Fisher, with only final assembly taking place at Dagenham. It was intended as part of the Ford Classic range of cars but the body was complex and expensive to produce. With new production methods, time demands from Dearborn and a need to match opposition manufacturers in price, the Ford Classic and Consul Capri were almost doomed from the start. The Ford Classic was made from 1961 to 1963, and replaced by the Cortina-derived Ford Corsair. The Consul Capri included Ford Classic De-Luxe features, including four headlights, variable speed wipers, 9.5 in (241 mm) front disc brakes, dimming dashboard lights, and a cigar lighter. The four speed transmission was available with either a column or floor change. It was proclaimed as "The First Personal car from Ford of Great Britain" (Ford of Great Britain, sales literature, December 1961) Initially fitted with a 1340 cc 3 main bearing engine (model 109E), the early cars were considered underpowered and suffered from premature crankshaft failure. Engine capacity was increased in August 1962 to 1498 cc (model 116E) and this engine was a vast improvement. The first 200 Capris were left-hand-drive cars for export including Europe and North America. In Germany at the 1961 Frankfurt Auto Show, Ford sold 88 Capris. In February 1963 a GT version (also 116E) was announced. The new GT engine, developed by Cosworth, featured a raised compression ratio to 9:1, a modified head with larger exhaust valves, an aluminium inlet manifold, a four branch exhaust manifold and, most noticeably, a twin-choke Weber carburettor - this being the first use of this make on a British production car. The same engine was announced for use in the Ford Cortina in April 1963. Overall the car was very expensive to produce and in the latter part of its production was running alongside the very popular Ford Cortina. Sales were disappointing and the Consul Capri was removed from sale after just two and a half years with 19,421 sold, of which 2002 were GT models. Just 1007 cars were sold in 1964, the last year of production, 412 of them being GTs. The Consul Capri was discontinued in July 1964. The Consul Capri (335) is one of the rarest cars from Ford of Great Britain. A Capri was tested by the British The Motor magazine in 1962 and had a top speed of 79.0 mph (127.1 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 22.6 seconds. The intention was to reproduce in Europe the success Ford had had with the North American Ford Mustang; to produce a European pony car. It was mechanically based on the Cortina and built in Europe at the Dagenham and Halewood plants in the United Kingdom, the Genk plant in Belgium, and the Saarlouis and Cologne plants in Germany. The car was named Colt during development stage, but Ford were unable to use the name, as it was trademarked by Mitsubishi. Although a fastback coupé, Ford wanted the Capri Mk I to be affordable for a broad spectrum of potential buyers. To help achieve that, it was available with a variety of engines. The British and German factories produced different line-ups. The continental model used the Ford Taunus V4 engine in 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 L engine displacement, while the British versions were powered by the Ford Kent straight-4 in 1.3 and 1.6 L form. The Ford Essex V4 engine 2.0 L (British built) & Cologne V6 2.0 L (German built) served as initial range-toppers. At the end of the year, new sports versions were added: the 2300 GT in Germany, using a double-barrel carburettor with 125 PS (92 kW), and in September 1969[4] the 3000 GT in the UK, with the Essex V6, capable of 138 hp (103 kW). Under the new body, the running gear would have been familiar to anyone used to working on the underside of a 1966 Cortina. Rear suspension employed a live axle supported on leaf springs with short radius rods.[4] MacPherson struts featured at the front in combination with rack and pinion steering which employed a steering column that would collapse in response to a collision.[4] The initial reception of the car was broadly favourable. In the June 1970 edition of the Monthly Driver's Gazette, tester Archie Vicar wrote of the gearchange that it was "...in Ford fashion easy to operate but not very jolly". In the same review Vicar summed up the car as follows: "Perhaps with a bit of work it can be given road-holding and performance less like an American car and more like a European one".[5] The range continued be broadened, with another 3.0 variant, the Capri 3000E introduced from the British plant in March 1970, offering "more luxurious interior trim".[4] In April 1970, Ford began selling the Capri outside Europe, in the North American, South African and Australian markets. These versions were all powered by the underpowered Kent 1.6 engine although a Pinto straight-4 2.0 L replaced it in 1971. All North American versions featured the "power dome" hood and four round 5 3/4" US-spec headlights. They carried no "Ford" badging, as the Capri was sold by only Mercury dealers and promoted to US drivers as "the sexy European". Hans Heyer 1973 with Ford Capri at the Nürburgring A new 2637 cc version of the Cologne V6 engine assembled by Weslake and featuring their special all alloy cylinder heads appeared in September 1971, powering the Capri RS2600. This model used Kugelfischer fuel injection to raise power to 150 PS (110 kW) and was the basis for the Group 2 RS2600 used in the European Touring Car Championship. The RS2600 also received modified suspension, a close ratio gearbox, lightened bodywork panels, ventilated disc brakes and aluminium wheels. The 2.6 L engine was detuned in September for the deluxe version 2600 GT, with 2550 cc and a double-barrel Solex carburettor. Germany's Dieter Glemser won the Drivers' title in the 1971 European Touring Car Championship at the wheel of a Ford Köln entered RS2600 and fellow German Jochen Mass did likewise in 1972. The very first Ford Special, was the Capri Vista Orange Special. The Capri Special was launched in November 1971 and was based on the 1600 GT, and 2000 GT models. It was only available in Vista orange and was dealer fitted with a boot mounted spoiler and rear window slats - a direct link to the Mustang. The Special also had some additional optional extras such as a push-button radio, fabric seat upholstery, inertia reel seat belts, heated rear screen and black vinyl roof. There were only 1200 Vista Orange Capri specials made. One of the last limited editions of the original Mk I, was a version that came in either Metallic Green or black with Red interior and featured some additional extras, such as cloth inserts in the seats, hazard lights, map reading light, opening rear windows, vinyl roof and for the first time a bonnet bulge was fitted to the sub-3.0 litre models. This special edition was only available with a 1.6 or 2.0 engines and had the full title of GTXLR Special. [edit] Mk I facelift Ford Capri 1973 The Capri proved highly successful, with 400,000 cars sold until 1970. Ford revised it in 1972 to become what is known by enthusiasts as the Capri "Bis" (i.e. MiG-21bis, or "plus") or, in the UK, the "Mk I facelift" Capri.[citation needed] The car received a new and more comfortable suspension, rectangular headlights, enlarged tail-lights and new seats. The Kent engines were replaced by the Ford Pinto engine and the previously UK-only 3000 GT joined the German lineup. In the UK the 2.0 L V4 remained in use. In addition, North American versions received larger rubber-covered bumpers (to comply with U.S. DOT regulations) for 1973. 1973, saw the highest sales total the Capri ever attained, at 233,000 vehicles: the 1,000,000th Capri, an RS 2600, was completed on 29 August.[6] In December, Ford replaced the Cologne V6 based RS2600 with the Essex V6 based RS3100, with the usual 3.0 L Essex V6's displacement increased to 3098 cc. Unlike its predecessor, it used a double-barrel Weber carburettor, and reached the same 150 PS (110 kW). Only 250 RS3100s were built for homologation purposes. However, the car was still competitive in touring car racing, and Ford Motorsport produced a 100-model limited edition with this new engine. The Group 4 RS3100’s engine was tuned by Cosworth into the GAA, with 3412 cc, fuel injection, DOHC, four valves per cylinder and 435 hp (324 kW) in racing trim. The car also featured improved aerodynamics. Besides the racing RS3100, the GAA was also used in Formula 5000. After 1.2 million cars sold, and with the 1973 oil crisis, Ford chose to make the new car more suited to everyday driving with a shorter bonnet, larger cabin and the adoption of a hatchback rear door. By the standards of the day, the Capri II was a very well evolved vehicle with very few reliability issues. For Germany the Capri now offered 1.3 litre (55 PS (40 kW)), 1.6 litre (72 PS (53 kW)) or 2.0 litre (88 PS (65 kW)) in-line four cylinder engines, complemented by a 2.3 litre (108 PS (79 kW)) and the UK sourced 3.0 litre V6. Although it was mechanically similar to the Mk I, the Capri II had a revised larger body and a more modern dashboard including a smaller steering wheel. The 2.0 L version of the Pinto engine was introduced in the European model and was placed below the 3.0L V6. The Capri still maintained the large square headlights, which became the easiest way to distinguish between a Mk II and a Mk III. Larger front disc brakes and a standard alternator finished the list of modifications. 1975 Ford Capri Mk II 2.0 JPS In order to keep the sporty appeal of the car, Ford introduced the John Player Special limited edition, (known as the JPS) in March 1975. Available only in black or white, the JPS featured yards of gold pinstriping to mimic the Formula 1 livery, gold colored wheels, and a bespoke upgraded interior of beige cloth and carpet trimmed with black. In May 1976, and with sales decreasing, the intermediate 3.0 GT models disappeared to give way for the upscale 3.0 S and Ghia designations. In October 1976, production was limited to the Saarlouis factory only and the following year the Capri left the American market with only 513,500 models sold. The first cars were available in March 1978, but failed to halt a terminal decline in sales. The concept of a heavily facelifted Capri II was shown at the 1976 Geneva show: a Capri II with a front very similar to the Escort RS2000 (with four headlamps and black slatted grille), and with a rear spoiler, essentially previewed the model some time before launch. The Mk III featured improved aerodynamics, leading to improved performance and economy over the Mk II and the trademark quad headlamps were introduced. At launch the existing engine and transmission combinations of the Capri II were carried over, with the 3.0 S model regarded as the most desirable model although in truth the softer, Ghia derivative with automatic rather than manual transmission the bigger seller of the two V6 engined models. Unlike sales of the contemporary 4-door Cortina, Capri sales in Britain were to private buyers who would demand less discounts than fleet buyers allowing higher margins with the coupé. Ford tried to maintain interest in 1979 with Ford Rallye Sport, Series X, "X Pack" options from the performance oriented RS parts range. Although expensive and slow selling these proved that the press would enthusiastically cover more developed Capris with higher performance. Despite being the most popular sporting model in Britain for most of its production life, the third generation Capri was also one of the most stolen cars in Britain during the 1980s and early 1990s, being classified as "high risk" of theft in a Home Office report.[7] The 3.0 S was used extensively in the TV series The Professionals, with characters Bodie driving a silver 3.0 S and Doyle a gold 3.0 S, which was credited with maintaining interest in the car in the UK.[citation needed] [edit] 2.8 Injection models In 1981, the 3.0 V6 powerplant was dropped from the line-up, while a new sporty version debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, called the 2.8 Injection. The new model was the first regular model since the RS2600 to use fuel injection. Power rose to 160 PS (118 kW) giving a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph), but the car still had a standard four-speed gearbox. The Capri 2.8 Injection breathed new life into the range and kept the car in production 2–3 years longer than Ford had planned. The four-speed gearbox was replaced with a five-speed unit early on – at the same time Ford swapped the dated looking chequered seats for more luxurious looking velour trim. A more substantial upgrade was introduced in 1984 with the Capri Injection Special. This development used half leather seating and included a limited slip differential. Externally the car could be easily distinguished by seven spoke RS wheels (without the customary "RS" logo since this was not an RS vehicle) and color coded grille and headlamp surrounds. At the same time the 2.0 L Capri was rationalized to one model the 2.0 S, which simultaneously adopted a mildly modified suspension from the Capri Injection. The 1.6 model was also reduced to one model, the 1.6 LS. [edit] 2.8 Turbo From July 1981 to Sept 1982, German RS dealers marketed a limited edition, Zakspeed inspired, left-hand drive only, 'Werksturbo' model with 190 PS (140 kW), which could propel the car to 220 km/h (137 mph).[8] Based on a 3.0 S, this derivative featured widened bodywork, front and rear 'Ford Motorsport' badged spoilers, deep 7.5j four-spoked RS alloy wheels and an RS badged engine. The engine was based on a normally aspirated 2.8 litre V6, Ford Granada engine. Figures of around 200 produced examples are common, but numbered transmission tunnels possibly indicate 155 conversions were made.[9] [edit] Tickford Turbo The Tickford Capri used the 2.8 Injection Cologne engine and developed 205 hp (153 kW). This version also featured a luxury interior with optional full leather retrim and Wilton carpeting and headlining, large rear spoiler, colour coded front grille, deeper bumpers and 'one off' bodykit designed by Simon Saunders, later of KAT Designs and now designer of the Ariel Atom. Rear disc brakes were standard on the Tickford, which featured numerous other suspension modifications. This model was essentially rebuilt by hand by Tickford at approximately 200 hours per car. It sold fewer than 100 units.[citation needed] One problem was the relative price difference to the standard Capri Injection, with the Tickford version costing twice as much. [edit] Turbo Technics conversions Independent tuner Turbo Technics also released a turbocharged 200 hp (149 kW) and 230 hp (172 kW) evolution which came supplied with a specially built gearbox. The Tickford Capri pricing issues meant that Ford also sanctioned the Turbo Technics conversion as semi-official, although only the German RS and British Tickford ever appeared in Ford literature as official Ford products. [edit] Capri Laser From November 1984 onwards, the Capri was sold only in Britain, with only right hand drive cars being made from this date. The normally aspirated 1.6 and 2.0 variants were rebranded with a new trim level – "Laser" – which featured a fully populated instrument pod, leather gear lever, leather steering wheel, four-spoke alloy wheels as used on the S models, an electric aerial and colour-coded grille and mirrors. [edit] Capri 280 1987 Ford Capri Mk III 280 The last run limited edition "Brooklands" Green, 280 model, featuring a limited slip differential, full leather Recaro interior and 15 inch versions of the seven spoke 13 inch wheels fitted to the superseded Capri Injection Special. Ford originally intended to make 500 turbo charged vehicles (by Turbo Technics) complete with gold alloy wheels and name it the Capri 500 but a change of production planning meant a name change to Capri 280 as the cars were simply the last models that ran down the production line. A total of 1,038 Capri 280s were built. When the last Capri was made on 19 December 1986, 1,886,647 cars had rolled off the production lines. Production had ended at Halewood, UK in 1976 and the Capri was made exclusively in Germany from 1976 to 1986. All were Germany-produced. Headlamps were four round sealed-beams, and turn signal lamps were grill mounted on all U.S.-spec 1971-74 Capris and 1976-78 Capri II's. Ford hood letters were replaced with Capri letters, and a trunk-mounted Mercury script was added.[10] Full instrumentation wasn't available on 1971-72 4-cylinder models but was made standard equipment from 1973 on. An optional interior decor package, changed by name to the "Ghia" package for the Capri II, featured deluxe interior trim and features. 1973 Ford Capris were the Mk I facelift models featuring the new grill, larger taillights and new interior and dash. The '73 model had the Federally-mandated 5-mph front bumper for '73. The bumper was extended, the gap closed with a silver filler panel. 1974 models had larger bumpers front and rear with wraparound urethane, body-color bumper covers to meet the revised Federal front and rear 5 mph standard. 1976-78 models were the re-designed hatchback models offered worldwide since 1974, fitted with the grill-mounted turn signal lamps and the required round sealed-beam headlamps, 5 mph body-color bumpers and catalytic converter, requiring no-lead fuel. In 1976, an 'S' (JPS) special edition featured black or white paint with gold-colored wheels, gold pinstriping, and upgraded two-tone interior in beige and black. Originally Cologne-built Capris imported to North America were fitted only with the British 1600 OHV (1.6 L), 64 hp (48 kW) Kent engine with the 4-speed manual transmission. The 1971 Capri offered the Kent-built 1600 I4 and the optional, Cologne-built OHC 2000 (2.0 L) I4 engine for improved performance with 101 hp (75 kW). An optional 3-speed automatic transmission was made available with the 2000 I4 engine. In 1972-73, the 2000 I4 became the standard engine, and an OHV 2600 (2.6 L) Cologne V6 was optional, which produced 120 hp (89 kW). The 1600 I4 was dropped. For 1974, new engines were used-the OHC 2300 (2.3 L) I4 and OHV 2800 (2.8 L) Cologne V6; The engines were carried over for the 1976-77 Capri ll hatchback models. 1983 Mercury Capri RS In 1979, no longer importing the Ford Capri, but capitalizing on the model's positive image, Mercury dealers began selling a new Capri that was a re-styled Ford Mustang. It was initially available with a 88 hp (66 kW) 2.3 L4, 2.8 L V6 and 302 (5.0 L) V8. The 2.8 L V6 was phased out very early in the 1980 model year and the 3.3 L (200 ci) L6 replaced it. The 3.3 L L6 would be phased out in 1983 for a 3.8 L V6 with a carburetor and then CFI fuel injection in 1984. In 1984, the Capri was available with a 175 hp (130 kW) turbocharged 2.3 L 4-cylinder engine or a 175 hp (130 kW) 302 V8. While lighter than the V8 model, the Capri Turbo lacked the torque of the V8 and suffered from turbo lag, making it slower. Next year, the V8 was rated at 210 hp (157 kW) and the turbo model was dropped. After 1986, the US-built Mercury Capri was dropped. In 1991, a new Mercury Capri was introduced, this model being fully imported from Australia (see below). It was a convertible with four seats, front wheel drive and a 100 hp (75 kW) 4 cylinder 1.6 L engine. It was also available with a 132 hp (98 kW) 1.6 turbo engine. Both versions were dropped after 1994. [edit] Australia [edit] Mk I The Ford Motor Company of Australia manufactured the European designed Mk I Capri at its plant in the Sydney suburb of Homebush from 1969 until 1972. The Capri was offered to the Australian market from 3 May 1969 as the 1600 Deluxe and the 1600 GT, using the 1.600 L Ford Kent OHV engine. On 25 February 1970, the 3000 GT was launched, equipped with the 3.0 L Ford Essex V6. At the same time the 1600 GT became the 1600 XL whilst the 1600 Deluxe remained unchanged. In November 1972, production of the Capri ended in Australia, with a total of 15,122 vehicles having been made. In 1973, Ford Australia imported fifty Capri RS3100 models. Many of the surviving cars are well preserved and some were used in competitive motorsport.[citation needed]. (December 2010) 1989-1992 Ford Capri (SA) convertible, with optional removable hardtop roof The Ford Capri name was revived in Australia in 1989. The Australian Capri, codenamed the SA30, was an entry point convertible. It used Mazda 323 engines and mechanicals which Ford Australia had adopted as the basis of the Laser. It had a bodyshell designed by Ghia and an interior by ItalDesign. Ironically during development of the Capri (that Mazda was aware of[citation needed]), Mazda was developing the MX-5, a vehicle that although considerably more expensive is commonly considered[who?] its direct competitor, perhaps because they both lack a metal roof. Two models were originally offered: a standard 1.6 L model, and a turbocharged variant, with 136 PS (100 kW). 1993–1994 Ford Capri (SE) XR2 convertible. The Australian-built Capri was intended primarily for export to the US. Exports began in 1991, as the Mercury Capri, and sales briefly exceeded those of the MX-5, but then dropped rapidly[citation needed], so production ceased in 1994. The media played that the car was plagued by quality problems and recalls, although many still exist today perhaps[original research?] due to the mechanical robustness of the Laser/323 upon which it was based. The retail price of a US specification Capri in the US was less than the retail price of an Australian specification Capri in Australia. Approximately 90% of production was exported to the US and the increased shipping costs were offset by the reduced cost of manufacturing the "mainstream" left hand drive model compared with the small volume right hand drive model for the Australian market. The 1989-94 Capri was assessed in the Used Car Safety Ratings 2006 as providing "worse than average" protection for its occupants in the event of a crash. It was also highly criticized as commonly having leaking roof problems, even after multiple replacements from Ford Dealerships. This was eventually resolved by a new roof sealing system, and 100% testing in the factory [edit] South Africa [edit] Mk I Ford of South Africa assembled the Capri from 1970 to 1972 with a similar model range to the UK. No facelift models or RS variants were marketed in South Africa. About 500 Capris were converted by specialist Basil Green Motors to run the 302 Ford Windsor V8 engine. These models were known as the Capri Perana and were very successful in local touring car events, winning the 1970 South African championship and, in a different format, the 1971 championship as well. No Mk II and Mk III Capris were exported to, or built in South Africa. Most of the Capris that survive in South Africa are 1.6 or 3.0 models.
