OnStream reduces emissions with Ford ECOnetic technology BRENTWOOD, Essex, 22 July 2010 – The Ford Transit ECOnetic is to play a key role in helping a major service supplier reduce its emissions. OnStream, a leading supplier of gas and electricity metering services, is taking delivery of 50 Ford Transit ECOnetic vans. These will be used by its ‘smart meter’ technicians to deliver and install the latest in gas and electric metering technology to homes across Britain. A wholly owned subsidiary of Britain’s largest utility business, National Grid, OnStream has a Ford fleet of around 2,850 vehicles. Smart meters employ mobile communications-based technology which enable energy suppliers to monitor energy consumption and update tariffs. The meters also communicate with user-friendly home display units which help consumers to keep a close eye on their energy use, with the aim of helping them to reduce consumption. Andy Spence, OnStream operations delivery manager, said: “OnStream’s smart meter technology is aimed at helping the consumer reduce energy consumption and waste emissions, so it’s wholly appropriate that our technicians help us to meet our energy reduction targets by driving the Ford Transit ECOnetic.” Stephen Gafson, direct sales manager, Ford of Britain, said: “Ford is one of the first manufacturers to transfer from its cars to vans technology that reduces fuel consumption. Vehicles have been lowered to reduce drag, aerodynamics kits have been added, low-resistance tyres introduced and low viscosity transmission oil substituted. The results have been dramatic - a combination of improved aerodynamics, special low-friction oil in the transmission and low-resistance tyres has cut around 12g/km off the emission levels of the conventional Ford Focus model, for example.
