After a first drive at its international launch in Italy, its fair to say that it delivers as much as it promises... IT MAY HAVE THE SAME COMPACT FOOTPRINT but the all-new Fiesta, destined to be sold for the first time globally and to become Ford's best-selling model range is billed by Ford as its 'smallest large car'. Whilst having virtually the same footprint as the outgoing models, the new Fiesta has improved space, better specification, greater safety and really smart 'Kinetic' styling. Not only will it meet the demands of a huge range of customers but it will be a serious proposition for the growing number of UK customers considering down-sizing. These people want the looks, the feel and the specification of a larger car but in a smaller package and at lower prices. New Fiesta prices range from £8,695 up to £13,695 and a long list of extra cost options not necessarily needed will push the prices higher. Customers will also have to fork out an extra £300 for the Electronic Stability Programme, which should really be fitted as standard. Forty different models in the all-new Fiesta range are about to make their debut in UK dealerships (October, 2008). These are made up of three- and five-door versions and there are four petrol and two diesel (revised and new) engine options. The petrol engines are expected main-selling 1.25-litre 59bhp and 81bhp units plus the 1.4 95bhp engine and the all-new 1.6-litre 118bhp. The TDCi diesel engines are 1.4-litre 67bhp and 1.6-litre 89bhp units. In addition, there are the three- and five-door 1.6-litre TDCi ECOnetic fuel and CO2 saving variants. Manual and automatic transmissions are also in the line-up but not all engines are offered with each specification. While the Studio specification Fiesta has the headline-grabbing starter price of £8,695, it is expected that only two per cent of all-new Fiesta sales will be for this particular model. It is offered only in three-door body form with 1.25-litre petrol and 1.4-litre TDCi engine options but has body-coloured bumpers, Intelligent Protection System, reach and rake-adjustable steering and power mirrors as standard. Style specification, from £9,295, adds body-coloured, powered and heated door mirrors, electric front windows and remote central locking. A bright headlamp finish completes its stylish exterior. The Style+, priced from £10,395, adds the comfort and convenience of air conditioning and a Quickclear windscreen. Anticipated to account for 50 per cent of all-new Fiesta sales, Style and Style+ offer a choice of engines including 1.25 and 1.4-litre Duratec petrol with various power outputs. Zetec (from £10,995) and Titanium (from £12,095) have a 'premium' look and feel, with a chrome surround to the grille and side windows, front fog lamps, leather steering wheel and air conditioning. Zetec adds a traditional luxury feel with chrome, finished off with 15-inch alloy wheels and projector headlamps while Titanium brings a contemporary look to this equipment level with higher contrast materials, such as dark gloss surfaces and bright metal accents. Both models offer a broad spectrum of engines, with Duratec petrols available in 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6-litre and Duratorq TDCi diesels in either 1.4 or 1.6-litre, with a choice of power outputs. Zetec S, from £12,595, has subtle sports styling additions including five-spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, front fog lamps, sports spoiler and bumper skirts. This theme is continued on the inside with a leather steering wheel, unique sports gear knob and sports seats creating a focused driving environment. Standard equipment adds a trip computer, side airbags and air conditioning. The Zetec S also has the all-new 1.6-litre 118bhp Duratec Ti-VCT petrol engine, but will additionally be available with the 1.6-litre 89bhp TDCi turbodiesel engine. ECOnetic versions are priced from £11,845 and use a 1.6-litre TDCi turbodiesel unit tuned for economy, lowered suspension and low rolling resistance tyres to achieve low emissions of 98g/km making it exempt from the UK road fund duty. Lighter in weight but stronger and with a stiffer body, the all-new Fiesta looks and feels a much improved car and you can bet it will be near, or at, the top of all the Car of the Year awards and competitions. Whether in three- or five-door guise, the aerodynamic wedge-shape styling enhanced by muscular and angular styling lines makes the new Fiesta look larger than the outgoing version even though the overall length is more or less the same, at 3,958mm. It really is a very pleasing car to look at and quite distinctive. Better still, it looks expensive and upmarket. The three-door models look sportier but the five-door models are, in real life, more practical. Inside, it looks and feels a more expensive product thanks to a nice combination of textures and materials. Ford is particularly proud of the new Fiesta's dramatic centre-stack control module that takes on the design of a mobile 'phone; once you have spent a few minutes to find your way around the system, all of the functions are quite logical. On the downside, the folding rear seats do not quite fold flat; the back of the rear seats are untrimmed metal (you would expect carpeting to match the boot); and there is no roof grab handle for the front passenger. However, the boot capacity is a reasonable 295 litres should you choose to specify your Fiesta with a puncture repair kit (with the no-cost option spare wheel it is 281 litres). Fold the rear seat, and you have 979 litres of cargo space. The new, all-electric power-steering is perfectly weighted; it's precise, gives good feedback and is light at low speeds and gets usefully heavier the faster the car is driven. The suspension is first rate and has been redesigned to give a big-car capability of ironing out bumps, potholes and tarmac ripples. Grip is generally superb although there is some bodyroll in the tyre walls from the skinnier section tyres the larger wheels and wider tyres of the more up-range models perform better. During the international press launch test drive in Italy we had the chance to sample just two of the engines on offer. The all new 1.6-litre, 118bhp petrol unit and the 1.6-litre 89bhp TDCi diesel unit. To get our hands on the likely best-selling 1.25 81bhp petrol engine and others we will have to wait until the cars arrive in the UK. In brief, the new 1.6-litre petrol engine is a willing and free-revving unit and, being low geared, generally very responsive and good to drive at low speeds in town traffic. Maximum torque is 112lb ft at 4,050rpm so it needs to be worked hard to get the best out of it on the open road. Under test, this engine returned 31.7mpg. Compared to this unit, I think the 1.25-litre petrol unit will feel a bit 'weedy'. Pick of the two engines on this occasion, and I suspect overall, is the 1.6-litre 89bhp TDCi turbodiesel unit. Although the power output is less than the 1.6 petrol unit, the 150lb ft of torque from 1,750rpm makes it very flexible, responsive and overall a nicer model to drive and it returned 51.6mpg during some fairly hard driving. According to the official figures, owners can expect as much as 67.3mpg. It would be my choice, as would the five-door body style, probably with the most popular Zetec specification. Ford's new Fiesta proved hard to fault there really wasn't anything to complain about. But on the 'plus' side there was a lot in its favour, including great looks, 'big car' feel and ride comfort, surefooted handling, a pleasure to drive, well-designed interior, excellent fuel economy, low CO2 emissions, cheap road tax, lower insurance costs and a good price. Overall Rating 33 Reviews For Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi 68 Zetec Guest 31st Oct 2010 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review Have had my 58 Tdci for nearly two years.Covered 23k.In that time it has never dropped below 60 mpg, with a mix of town and motorway driving.only trouble have had in that time is a faulty rear screen and the aircon recharged.Ford dealer charged £140 for both the yearly services.Might be a bit expensive for what they do.But i have had excellent service from them when i had warranty issues.
Only thing annoying about the diesel is the noise when the engine is cold, and the road noise on motorways can be a bit tiresome.
As with any mass produced car some will have problems. And experience has shown me all models are prone to one thing thing or another. If you think leaking injector seals are a huge cost.Try having a focus diesel with a dmf fault at £1200, or a Vaux Meriva steering failure at £750.On the whole this model has been a good buy. Report this review Well I've had this car a few months now, it's a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 TDCI on a 54 plate. I've owned a diesel Fiesta before (a 1.6 Zetec S TDCI) and I was very very happy with it, commuting 150 miles a day in it. I suppose I'm relatively happy with this, but my major gripe is the MPG. I bought this on starting a new job as I now have to drive 40 miles each way. All the literature points to 54mpg as the minimum, which sounded great to me and the overriding afctor in deciding to buy it. I'd previo ... The engine fitted is a Peugeot unit and (based on blogs on the internet), there is a known problem with the injector seals as mine have just blown after 45K miles.
Is the Ford warranty worth the paper it is written on? My service history is up to date, but I have always used an independent garage for my servicing as it is cheaper and I have found they are more flexible in terms of when they can schedule you in if a fault occurs between services. I tried ... Read Guest's review (157 words) Guest 26th Aug 2010 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review Bought this Fiesta 1.4TDCI to replace my wife's previous 1.8 non-turbo Fiesta (174,000 trouble-free 52mpg miles).
Mileage was 27,000 and 8 months later at 32,000 miles the power steering rack had to be replaced (£900 inc. a service). At 36,000 miles poor starting and fumes caused by leaking injector seals and a cracked exhaust gas recirculation pipe had to be replaced (£925 inc a service) with a warning that the front discs were worn and with pads would be £225 approx!

never less than 50mpg
Its cheap to run,
Its got plenty of space,
Accelleration is ok on the turbo
£35 per year road tax
After 90k hard miles it still drives well and not cost me much to maintain. cons,
Poor top speed - similar to a 1.6 Petrol
not that attractive to look at
To get 65mpg+ you need to drive under 55mph All in all, the car does what it meant to do perfectly ... Report this review can anyone tell me at best case and worst case how many miles I should get on a full tank of diesel, just bought a 1.4 tdci and i'm getting approx 450-480 miles on a full tank, mainly motorway driving at 60mph. The handbook says combined fuel economy is 62mpg, so i'm not getting anywhere near that am I? Or am I calculating it totally wrong? Report this review I've had my 1.4 tdci from new, if you have buckled front wheels its probably been a driving school car like mine was, at 17k miles the injector seals had to be replaced & again at 23k miles, at 38k miles it had to have a new clutch costing almost £700, its now done 52k miles and the engine is smelling of oil, I wish I had stuck by my guns when I had serious engine problems with a 2 litre granada at 90k miles & vowed never to buy another ford, I didnt heed my own warnings & am now p ... Report this review the car is going in for injector seals next week, done 21,000 miles i will be selling it shortly,as the seals seem to be a common fault on this model.I was very pleased with this car until this,if it was a one off i would keep it,but the seals could go again on the next 20,000 miles. Read Guest's review (59 words) Guest 13th Jan 2010 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review I have had the same problem as everyone else. Number four diesel injector needs seals and washers replacing. Dealer quoted £215 plus VAT plus parts. Because they have to take the engine apart. Said it was 3 hours labour. I can't believe so many 1.4 TDCi owners have been burdened with this. I too will be going to an independent garage to see if I can get it done cheaper. I think these are the same engine as the Peugeot 1.4hdi which was pure rubbish.
I would never buy a diesel Fiesta again, would going to buy an 2005 Focus 1.6 tdci but these engines are poor too giving loads of bother. Best to stick to the petrol in these. New Fiesta is brill to drive only weakness is the 90hp TDCi rather than the 110hp it should have. Chip it and get about 115 so no probs there. Kit is mean but mpg should see approaching 60mpg.I have a mk6 Zetec S petrol and should have bought the TDCi version forehead View Public Profile Find More Posts by forehead 13-04-2010, 17:52 #5 spampebs Soft lad!! Alot of turbo cars, especially diesels can make more than advertised. Especially if there run on a cold day on an optomistic dyno. __________________ "Horsepower sells the car, torque wins the race" - Carroll Shelby great_kahn View Public Profile Find More Posts by great_kahn View Blog 16-04-2010, 14:45 #7 AndyTucker Registered User Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: CoventryCar: Volvo S60 D5 SE Geartronic, Mazda MX-5 1.8iS, LR Defender 90 V8 Posts: 893 Quote: Originally Posted by great_kahn Alot of turbo cars, especially diesels can make more than advertised. For the manufacturer's figures, to engines are heatsoaked before the run to give a worst-case scenario. As an example, I dynoed my S60 on a cold morning on the calibrated dynos at work before and after a Ronbox, and it was making 196.6bhp pre-Ronbox (factory figure is 185bhp), and 229.4bhp after being Ronboxed. It was 6 degrees C when they ran mine before mapping and it made 173bhp. Is it true about the engine being heatsoaked? Would explain alot of the figures you get from turbo cars, i presume they are way more affected than nasp engines? __________________ "Horsepower sells the car, torque wins the race" - Carroll Shelby great_kahn View Public Profile Find More Posts by great_kahn View Blog 16-04-2010, 18:50 #9 skyblueads Registered User Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Exeter, DevonCar: '09 Citroen C3 Picasso, '72 BGT, Posts: 673 I know Ian thought his was superb. skyblueads View Public Profile Visit skyblueads's homepage! Still has the same 1.6TDCI engine. The engine was fine at 90bhp but bluefined to 108bhp. The engine in standard form is said to make 100bhp in most cases not the quoted 88bhp. With the superchip bluefin it will shock all but the fasted 2.0 diesal saloons out there. Will hold a 160bhp insignia and return 60mpg plus if driven with a light foot. Steve. It departed five months ago, and I still miss it. A really comfortable, well equipped little car, but they are getting a bit expensive these days. Since ordering mine, the price had gone up £2,400. We weren't allowed to tune ours, but reports of 115PS from the 90PS engine aren't unheard of with no other mods. Spend a little doing other things, and you could probably see 125ish. The Fiesta really is head and shoulders above any other supermini on the market right now - the Polo is so dull, it'll put you to sleep. The only other one I would recommend for those on a budget is the Hyundai i20 - a good car for not much money. Cheers, Ben Having had a ZT CDTi and ran it for 175k super chipped and ron box. Now ran my Fiesta sportvan 1.6TDCi for 52K I can say given a limited budget I would look at the ZT. Just as fast after both have been tweeked 48mpg for the ZT 60mpg for the Fiesta. Although the ford is fun its not in the same league as the ZT. Steve. I'll admit now to being picky, as I've already said I'm also not willing to go any older than what I have ('04 54). I've always had a soft spot for ZTs, nice big motor to munch the miles effortlessly. It's the same to tax as my 25, and when I'm 21, insurance will be similar to what I'm paying now. I honestly can't see it using much more fuel either, maybe even less. I'll also be setting around £1k of my budget as an emergency fund (knackered clutch etc). I'd think about a ZS, but IMHO the interior isn't wonderful (worse than a ZR IMHO) and it has that noisy engine. One of the only upsides I can think of if I have a ZR/ZS is I can keep my alloys! Yes, ZT is a big car, but it'll annoy my prat of a neighbour just that little bit more! Just to see his face will make it worth every penny. __________________ MG Coupe Design Project HERE There's actually a sketch there now aswell! I know the L series is fairly noisey, and i suppose the CDTI is newer and more refined with a hell of alot more sound proofind in the cabin on the ZT/75. But 150bhp diesel.. it would blow your tits off compared with 100bhp petrol __________________ "Horsepower sells the car, torque wins the race" - Carroll Shelby great_kahn View Public Profile Find More Posts by great_kahn View Blog 17-04-2010, 20:37 #17 welsh_mg_rover Automotive Design Student Join Date: May 2008 Location: Torfaen(Home)/Swansea (Uni)Car: Rover 25 1.4 Si (Facelift) Mileage: 65,105 Miles Posts: 2,641 Garages Garages Welsh_MG_Rover's 25 Quote: Originally Posted by great_kahn it would blow your tits off compared with 100bhp petrol That made me lol! __________________ MG Coupe Design Project HERE There's actually a sketch there now aswell! welsh_mg_rover View Public Profile Find More Posts by welsh_mg_rover 19-09-2010, 07:58 #18 cabinscooter Registered User Join Date: May 2007 Location: Worcestershire.Car: Other Manufacturer Posts: 239 I bought a new Fiesta 1.6TDCI Titanium last year and I have to say it was brilliant. Over 200nM of torque in such a light car made it go extremely well in my book. It would accelerate up hills in fifth with no effort. It was my first diesel so the noise and slight vibration at tickover took a bit of getting used to but once on the move I hardly noticed. However..
I have had a series of automatics in the past and going back to the old 'pudding stirrer' (albeit a very good one) and left foot 'tyre pump' was a bit of drag. I have now swapped it for a nearly new 1.4 petrol Titanium Auto and it is very smooth. Has nowhere near the 'go' of the diesel but I can live with that.
Problems ? No car is perfect. Minor problems on both cars with the brakes.
The diesel brakes used to 'stick' a bit when moving off in the morning. Ford said they would have to charge me to investigate !!!!!! What three year warranty ?
The brakes on the auto 'creak' when moving off and as it is an auto, the brakes are used more than on a manual. A bit surprised they are only drums on the back.
Overall, a brilliant car, ahead of the competition. A hot and spicy firebrand that the world seems a little bit duller without. It all started with the XR2, carried on with the XR2i, RS1800 and manic, mad RS Turbo, and even continued through the insurance-forced demise of the hot hatch sector; the last-generation Zetec-S was subdued but, experts say, an even better driver’s car than the famed Ford Puma. It’s taken a while for hot models of the latest car to arrive, but we drove the 2.0-litre ST last year and found it very good, if not a classic. What, then, will we make of perhaps the most controversial Fiesta hot hatch of all – the diesel-powered Zetec-S TDCi?Read more Ford car reviewsWhere does it fit?Hot diesel superminis are a growing breed. Peugeot started it off with the 2.0-litre HDi 206 XSi, but it was Skoda that really moved the game on with the remarkable 130bhp Fabia vRS. Seat uses the same engine in its Ibiza FR TDI, but also offers an even more manic 160bhp Cupra version, although that’s priced way beyond the Fiesta. Peugeot upped its game last year with the more closely-matched 206 HDi GTI, Ford now following with the Fiesta – which actually shares the same 1.6-litre engine, in a joint manufacturing deal. It’s a unit also seen in Citroen saloons, Ford MPVs, even Volvo estates, though oddly it’s detuned to 90bhp in the Zetec-S. The 206 offers 110bhp.Is it for you?The Fiesta is one of the country’s best-selling cars, so clearly does a lot right in many people’s eyes. Quick versions carry real currency and are universally respected. They also often look superb, this being no exception, as Ford is the master of getting quick-look bodykits and styling spot-on. The big attraction of diesel hot hatches, furthermore, is their low running costs. Drivers can have fun yet still return far better mileage figures than more prosaic petrol versions, while also saving the environment too. Fun with a clear conscience. What does it do well? This is a very sweet yet sporty drive. The gearchange is a short-throw delight (and the close-set lever is a treat), while the clutch and throttle are well-matched and the firm, meaty brakes exceptional. The steering is precise and fluid, if perhaps a touch light, and the chassis is very well-judged. A stiff structure means it feels secure and precise through corners, with maturity far beyond its means. It’s just so supple over bumps, with such a well-controlled body, that you soon start driving it with abandon, so much confidence does it inspire.Roll is well-contained, front wheel scrabble is remarkably absent despite all the engine’s torque (150lb/ft) and even when you overcook the high limits, it will do everything in its power to remain composed. And the engine? Anyone who says diesels can’t be sporty is wrong. This unit is smooth and revs freely, has a good spread of power, none of older diesels’ low-rev vibration and is discreetly zippy performer. All-out acceleration times don’t grab headlines but in reality it’s always ready thanks to high reserves of torque. A dignified but effective performer, rather like the car itself. What doesn’t it do well? The high driving position isn’t that sporty and some will grumble that the steering lacks reach adjustment, even though the driving position is hard to fault. At idle or under acceleration in first or second, the engine is rather noisy and ‘dieselly’, even though vibration is absent. Those expecting sporty performance at low revs will feel short-changed too; let it drop below 2,000rpm and the turbo boost falls away, meaning languid pace without a gearchange. This is the same in petrol cars but the diesel’s relaxed nature can fool you. Turbo lag is also pronounced in town if you don’t keep the revs high, but is less noticeable on the open road. At speed on smooth roads, the ride can feel a bit ‘knobbly’ and, more generally, the handling is so sophisticated and able, some old school drivers will feel it lacks excitement. It doesn’t, it’s just served up in a different way. What’s it like to live with? The seats are excellent, with hip-hugging bolsters and substantial side support. They are complemented by an ergonomically perfect interior. The plastics may seem hard and shiny in places – if better than the last Fiesta we tested – but it’s easy to forgive as everything is where it should be, visibility is clear and build quality solid. Entering and exiting this car makes you wonder how other manufacturers can make the same process so awkward. There’s ample space in the rear too, although the dark colour scheme and high-backed front seats make it seem more cramped than it is. Economy deserves special mention for its brilliance – over 60mpg – and in reality, this may prove even more economical than the smaller 1.4-litre TDCi; more torque equals less need to thrash it in the quest for power. Insurance ratings are low, servicing will cost pennies and such is the popularity of diesels, this should retain more second-hand than the 1.6-litre petrol alternative.Would we buy it?This is the most convincing of the new breed of diesel superminis yet, and arguably a more entertaining machine than the petrol-powered ST that sits above it in the range. The engine is a gem, the chassis nimble and mature far beyond its means, while aspects such as the well-planned interior and spot-on bodykit also add appeal. Like many Ford hot hatches, it’s not the cheapest model available, but the savings in fuel should be able to offset it. If you’re still not convinced, take a test drive. We’re sure you’ll agree it’s a fine fun car that’s preferable over the 1.6-litre petrol by the end.Key facts:Power: 90bhpTorque: 150lb/ft0-62mph: 11.2 secondsMax speed: 112mphEconomy: 62.8mpgPrice: £12,495 (April 2005)More Car ResearchMore ReviewsCar FinanceCar Insurance Rate this page: Poor Thank you for rating.
