Andy Enright reportsWe might as well get the cards on the table straight from the outset. This Sport trim level on the Ford Focus were looking at here isnt all that sporty compared to the rest of the range. Unlike the ripsnorting ST model, the Sport range is based on the most modest petrol engines and leaves the powerplants and suspension unchanged. If you can live with this little bit of marketing chicanery, youll end up with a car that has all the best attributes of the Focus design with some worthwhile extras for a modest mark up. The Sport model differs from the LX model in only three ways. For an additional £400, customers get front fog lights, a three-spoke leather trimmed steering wheel and 16-inch six-spoke alloy wheels. Thats it. There are no beefier anti roll bars or stiffer springs, no figure hugging sports seats or even the almost obligatory chicken-wire grille and white dials. This may be a little disappointing to some hoping for something a little lairier but the basic Focus chassis is so talented, even this relatively unmolested Sport trim has more than enough talent to see off the GTI versions of other hatches when the going gets twisty. It may lack a little in the lungs department when the road opens up though, especially if your Sport is equipped with either the 1.4-litre or 1. 6-litre powerplant. Fords tried and trusted 1.4-litre petrol unit will get the Focus to 60mph in a leisurely 14.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 101mph. More important for this car though, is the fuel consumption of a healthy 42.7mpg on the combined cycle and the reasonable emissions figure of 159g/km. Youll need to budget £13,045 for a three door or £13,645 for a five door model. If more horsepower than the 1. 4s 80bhp is called for, the 1.6-litre unit is good for a round 100bhp. This reduces the sprint to 60mph to 11.9 seconds and top speed creeps up to a fairly academic 111mph. Fuel economy isnt dented too adversely, with the combined figure dropping a mere half a mile to 42.2mpg. You best bet, however, will be to pick up one of the diesels (1.6 or 1. 8-litre TDCI units) or the 1.8-litre petrol. All offer superior muscle and the diesels retain very modest fuel consumption figures."Although you cant take the Sport badge too seriously, the car its stuck onto the back of is a ruthlessly efficient piece of engineering"Its this everyday mundanity of the Focus, even in this Sport guise, which threatens to obscure quite what an incredible car it is. That and the fact that we take this sort of competence for granted. Get underneath the Focus and youll find a more advanced suspension system than that of a Porsche 911. Ford of Europe gambled big with the original Focus, ploughing an enormous investment in hoping for big returns. The gamble paid off and the car was so much better than anything in its class that it instantly became the number one seller across Europe, a position it would take years to relinquish. Even now, many independent road testers would rate a 1998 Focus as best in class for handling against the pick of todays rivals. The second-generation car is, to a certain extent, still living off that initial investment. The suspension system is much the same and the lessons learned in packaging are still as relevant as ever. Still, what was a work of genius in 1998 still seems rather otherworldly today. Part of the reason for that lies in the fact that because the Focus was so good, it forced rival manufacturers to up their game. Volkswagen responded by stealing some of Fords best chassis engineers and developing a lookalike rear suspension setup for the latest Golf. Vauxhalls current Astra rides and handles like no car with a torsion beam rear suspension has any right to do and Peugeots 307 features a chassis with a rigidity previously reserved for Formula One cars. In short, rivals had diminished Fords edge in terms of ride and handling and had left the MK1 Focus way behind when it came to perceived quality. Taking its cue from the C-MAX mini-MPV, the current Focus interior looks reassuringly expensive. The branded Sony stereo, the metallic detailing on the centre console, instruments and chunky-rimmed steering wheel, the soft-touch fascia and the silicon-damped hinges all smack of executive class investment. Developers have worked to ensure that the feel of the switches a push button in the door, for example should have the same sound, feel and travel as a push button in the centre console or the sunroof control and that rotary switches retain the same feel whether they marshal mechanical or electrical applications. The riot of crazily intersecting hard plastics that was the first generation Focus interior has been replaced by something far more assured, more mature a word Ford repeat frequently at the time of the cars launch. Ford were the first of the major manufacturers to realise that people were growing in size both out and up and designed the original Focus to suit drivers of all sizes with wider opening doors and more headroom than the class norm. The latest Focus expands on this theme, offering an optional electrically adjustable pedal set. The multi-adjustable steering column helps in ensuring a comfortable driving position and Ford have integrated a number of practical aspects from the C-MAX mini-MPV including a glove box big enough to house a 1. 5-litre bottle, a sunglasses holder, a dash-top cubby and class-leading luggage space. The Focus Sport is a very accomplished vehicle. It would be a little easier to accept if Ford called it a GLX rather than dress up some non-existent sporting pretensions but thats a minor point. The Focus is a superb car and this one is no exception. It probably isnt the pick of the range but it is a decent pick. Fords problem is that Volkswagen not only copied the basic underpinnings of the Focus but has also dropped the prices of the Golf to bring them into line with Fords. Therefore you might need to lean on your Ford dealer for a discount. If they offer resistance, haggle harder. The Sport pack costs £500 and adds 18-inch alloy wheels and privacy glass, while the WRC pack costs £200 and includes World Rally Championship chequered flag decals and sill scuff plates.
