The Mark One Focus was revolutionary. The Mark Two is more evolutionary, but is still an excellent product, improved in 2008 by a surprisingly comprehensive facelift. Full Road Test We loved the original Focus - one of the most radical mainstream cars in recent memory, and by far the coolest thing to happen to the dowdy mid-sized hatchback segment in the last 20 years. The Mark Two could not possibly have been an equally big leap forward, but it is a usefully better car, especially when it comes to interior trim. The rather limp styling of the Mark Two has been tightened up by the mid-term facelift that provides a sharper front end and a more defined profile. The biggest step forward has been inside. While the Mark One felt like it had been trimmed by the same people responsible for McDonalds cartons, inside this one manages to radiate a real quality feel. Driving dynamics remain exemplary too, with ultra-accurate steering, a well-damped ride and properly sorted body control making the Focus a brilliant place to spend time on favourite "B" road. Motorway cruising is similarly accomplished, the Focus remaining calm and stable at speed, while the comfortable driving position helps to pass long stints at the wheel. All have decent passenger space, while saloon and estate variants have massive boots as well. If you are used to an early Mark Two Focus, you will be surprised at just how much quieter the facelifted car is: the 2.0 TDCI, in particular, is almost luxury-car smooth on a motorway. Ford's performance heritage is allowed to come to the fore through the ST and RS versions of the Focus. Both could justifiably be called hot hatches, but it is the RS that is the more extreme of the two. It gets to 62mph in just 5.9 seconds and is good for 163mph. The ST is no slouch, managing 62mph in 6.8 seconds, and offers the choice between three and five door versions. The RS is only available as a three door. And the bad news? Well cheaper versions suffer from a sometimes stingy lack of kit - and the more basic engines are lacking in urge and refinement compared to rivals. Breakdown StylingDefinitely improved by the 2008 facelift and now reasonably attractive in a nice metallic colour. Chunky estate version is still better looking than the five-door hatch.HandlingNo other mid-sized family car drives like this. In fact, precious few fully fledged sportscars do. Ford still knows how to make a great driver's car. ComfortGood noise insulation and a well-damped ride make the Focus a good place to while away the M5 or M62. Quality + reliabilityA well-finished, solid feeling cabin means this Focus is a dramatic improvement over the cheap-feeling first generation model. PerformanceSmaller petrol engines really lack urge when compared to rivals, but diesels are excellent. The 2.5 litre turbocharged ST and the RS are both great - if you can afford the fuel. RoominessGood by class standards with decent room for both front and rear seat passengers. The heavily raked tailgate cuts into the available luggage space on hatchback versions - estate is impressively commodious. Running costsLow servicing costs and decent fuel economy, especially from the diesel engines helps the Focus's financial case. Poor used values don't though sadly. Value for moneyA series of price rises have hit the Focus hard, and it is no longer the cheapest in its class. Equipment levels are poor at the bottom of the range but good elsewhere. Stereo / Sat navTop-end versions get an impressive Sony-branded stereo but base models make do with an average unit. Optional satnav isn't the best system on the market - but is decent value. It's not particularly pretty, but it's aimed at customers who value space and practicality over everything else. As a result, its large, squarely-proportioned boot is easy to access. The engine and trim lines echo the hatchback models, with Style specification offering air-conditioning and Zetec adding stylish extras, including alloy wheels. Turbodiesel engines make the most sense in what's a workhorse of a car, the 1.6 TDCi blending respectable performance with excellent economy and low emissions. Drive 4.5 /5 Precise steering and comfortable suspension On the road, the Focus Estate impresses with precise steering and comfortable suspension. Comfort is good in all models, although the diesel engines can rattle a bit when starting from cold. Petrol engines are smooth, and the gearshift is light and easy. The smaller petrol engines need working hard if you’re intent on filling the Focus Estate with passengers and using all the boot space. Comfort 4.0 /5 The Focus Estate is a useful and comfortable family car A spacious interior, decent refinement and a well considered driving position make the Focus Estate a useful and comfortable family or working car. Legroom is tight in the rear, but headroom is good, and sitting three adults abreast on the rear seats is possible - although only advisable for shorter journeys. The Focus Estate's well controlled suspension and firm yet supportive seats make longer drives an ache-free affair. Ford has worked hard on ensuring its cars are easy to access and comfortable for all - with good results. Reliability 4.5 /5 Early reliability problems have been ironed out It's not the youngest model when compared to direct rivals, but that should mean early reliability problems have been ironed out. Ford has been steadily improving in the Driver Power survey ratings, although the Focus came 51st in the top 100 for reliability. Crucially that was higher than its key competitor, the Vauxhall Astra. Practicality 4.7 /5 The large boot is well proportioned The Estate is the most practical model in the Focus-based range. It has a large, square 503-litre boot, while tough materials mean it’ll put up with heavy use. The rear seats fold flat quickly and easily for when you need the Estate's ultimate carrying capacity, offering 1,525 litres of load space when you do so. That's marginally more than the Volkswagen Golf Estate. For those wanting the fine driving attributes of the hatchback but a bigger load area, then the Focus Estate is the perfect choice. Value for money 4.0 /5 Newer rivals are more versatile and better equipped The Focus Estate isn’t quite the good-value proposition it once was. The car's appeal is still strong, but newer rivals are more versatile and better equipped. Shop sensibly and Ford dealers will offer decent discounts, though. Running costs 4.0 /5 Parts and servicing should be inexpensive Choose the diesel engines for punchy performance and the most satisfying fuel consumption - the 1.6 TDCi returns 62.8mpg on the official combined cycle. Parts and servicing should be inexpensive too, and with a huge choice of dealers, it's worth phoning a few to get the best price on regular servicing. Insurance should be sensible, but the Focus Estate won’t hold its value as well as the VW Golf Estate - meaning it’ll be worth less when you come to sell it. prices & specifications What the others say Auto Express 5.0 /5.0 If it's a great all-round load-lugger you’re looking for, the Focus Estate has always been a sensible choice. And with its new styling, the Ford is now more desirable than ever. Top Gear 14.0 /20.0 Few mid-sized estates come close to the Focus in terms of its lithe, responsive chassis and quick, informative steering. This is a car in which you can potter to the shops or make brisk cross-country progress. Honest John 5.0 /5.0 I wanted to try the wagon because there had been some criticism of noise levels inside the old model. And, in truth, at 70mph, with the engine turning over at just 2,000rpm, you could still hear it was a diesel. No problem with tyre noise, but, of course, the thick carpeting would have deadened any of that.
