No piano this time, but you'll have to read the  previous report  to make any sense of that. There's some remarkable design work in the latest Transit, not least the ability of the basic platform, in different lengths, to be adapted for front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, and even for longitudinal or transverse engine placings. The front-wheel drive vans come in 260, 280 and 300 specifications, at prices starting from around £12,681 on the road, excluding VAT. You don't get the 2.4-litre Duratorq turbo diesel engine we tried earlier in the FWD models, but that's no problem. The entry-level types have a 73bhp two-litre Duratorq, and there's also an uprated 98bhp version for applications which need more power. With light loads, both these sturdy power plants do well enough, but the 98bhp model (100PS in Ford's German-style notation) is a real charger. It's flexible low down, and the mid-range torque, much greater than in the older Transit diesels, really makes a difference. And the FWD models have an unexpectedly sweet gear change, if sweet isn't too wimpish a word for Vanman. They chunter easily round town, and seem more manoeuvrable in tight spaces, but it's on the open road that the front-wheel drive, revised steering, modified suspension and all the rest of it really come into their own. Out on country roads, especially with that commanding driving position, you can put the foot down without feeling there's a driven back axle bouncing along behind you. There isn't, of course. The suspension is much more able to cope with poor road surfaces, and the steering feels more accurate out in the lanes. Another benefit to operators of the front-wheel drive layout is that, without a prop-shaft, the load floor is much lower. The latest bodyshell is designed with less tumble home, and the width has been eased out, without making the exterior dimensions too bulky. Front-wheel drive Transits are in the one-tonne category. They come in three wheelbases, four load area lengths, and with a choice of roof heights. The cabin has a comfortable and supportive seat for the driver, and a double seat to his left, with a suitably shaped back, to take two passengers. There are plenty of stowage spaces for personal kit, a fascia-top documents tray, cupholders and a slot for the inevitable mobile phone. Altogether, it seems a civilised working environment, and if there's a tight schedule the FWD vans won't fall behind.
