But how does it fare against its rivals? 1. Looks 7/10 The well equipped Fiesta Ghia is stylish, and feels sportier than the Focus, although not a fully fledged hot hatch like the ST. The tested model was amethyst (purple) and came complete with tinted rear windows and 15 inch alloys. 2. Looks inside 6/10 Not a million miles away from the Focus, the dark grey interior of the Ghia has a sportier feel than its more sedate counterpart, and features a stylish leather trim. It’s a pity some of the dashboard controls still have a plasticy feel. 3. Practicality 7/10 Not a car designed for bringing back flat pack wardrobes from Ikea, but there’s a fair amount of space. There’s plenty of room in the front and back, a good sized glovebox, and the boot (large enough for a big supermarket shop) is accessible via the remote keyfob. 4. Ride and Handling 7/10 The handling is excellent, the suspension is firm but not harsh, while the steering has a sharp feel. But as for motorway driving, the noise level was so loud I had to keep checking I was in fifth gear. But this is a car designed for town driving, not the cross country long haul. 5. Performance 7/10 The 100bhp 1.6i has some extra kick, and the acceleration is as good as you’d expect from a small lightweight car, even at high speeds. The Ghia goes from 0-60 in 10.5 seconds, and has a maximum speed of 115mph. 6. Running Costs 7/10 It’s a supermini, so fuel consumption is a primary consideration – the Fiesta Ghia does a not-too-shabby 42.8mpg. Servicing is at 12,500 miles and Ford’s estimate for routine maintenance is £377. The Ghia comes with a one year new car warranty, one year’s breakdown cover, and a three year / 60,000 mile warranty. 7. Reliability 7/10 The new Fords have increased reliability, and this model is no exception. The Ghia has a solid feel, and performs well in customer satisfaction surveys. The Fiesta scores 55 in the Reliability Index – far higher than the average score thanks to Ford’s effort to keep repair costs down. Safety 7/10 With a four star EuroNCAP crash test rating, the Ghia comes with two airbags – driver and passenger side – and ABS with EBD as standard. A rear parking distance sensor is an optional extra, as is the ‘Reflex Pack’ – front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and centre rear head restraint. 9. Equipment 8/10 As you’d expect with a Ghia it’s all about the extras – electric windows (with driver’s side one-shot lowering), a perimeter alarm, air con, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, front fog lights, and a CD/radio with remote audio controls. Sadly the velour floor mats are an optional extra, as is satnav. 10. X-Factor 7/10 Two things – the sporty styling and the attention to detail. The handling and acceleration make you feel like you’re driving a proper sporty supermini, and the extras – like the side mirrors that turn inwards when you lock the car – justify the price. Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Ghia G 230 S based on Fiat 2300 Carrozzeria Ghia SpA (established 1915 in Turin) is one of the most famous Italian automobile design and coachbuilding firms, established by Giacinto Ghia and Gariglio as Carrozzeria Ghia & Gariglio, located at 4 Corso Valentino in Turin. Ghia initially made lightweight aluminum-bodied cars, achieving fame with the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500, winning Mille Miglia (1929). Between the world wars, Ghia designed special bodies for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lancia, one of the most famous was the Fiat 508 Balilla sports coupe (1933). The factory was rebuilt at Via Tomassi Grossi, after being demolished in an air raid during World War II (1943). After Ghia's death (1944), the company was sold to Mario Boano and Giorgio Alberti. The Ghia-Aigle subsidiary was established in Aigle, Switzerland (1948). Following differences between Boano and the company's Naples born chief engineer and designer Luigi Segre, Boano left the company in 1953 and ownership passed to Segre in 1954. Under the leadership of Luigi Segre, [2] the decade between 1953 and 1963 saw many foreign firms ordering Ghia designs, such as Ford (the Lincoln Futura concept car), Volkswagen (the Karmann Ghia), and Volvo (the Volvo P1800). Chrysler and its designer Virgil Exner became a close partner for 15 years, resulting in eighteen Chrysler Ghia Specials (1951-53), the K-310, the Chrysler Norseman, the Crown Imperial limousines (Jackie Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, and other luminaries owned one), and others. There are even a few Ghia-bodied Ferraris. Ghia also participated in the short-lived Dual-Ghia venture. Production by Ghia was always in very low numbers, giving the company's products even greater exclusivity than those of the other Italian coachbuilders. In 1953, Boano left for Fiat, the factory moved to via Agostino da Montefeltro, and Luigi Segre took over. Ghia then bought Pietro Frua, appointing Frua as head of Ghia Design (1957-60), designing the Renault Floride. After Segres death (1963), Ghia was sold to Ramfis Trujillo (1966), who sold to Alejandro de Tomaso (1967), owner of a rival design house, who took over, but had difficulty in running Ghia profitably. In 1970, he sold his shares to the Ford Motor Company. During this transition period, Ghia had partial involvement in the De Tomaso Pantera, a high-performance, mid-engine car with a 351 cu in (5,750 cc) OHV Ford V8. From 1973, the Ghia name became Ford's top trim-level in its mainstream model range. The trend began in Europe (Granada Ghia, Capri Ghia, Cortina Ghia, Escort Ghia, Fiesta Ghia, later Sierra Ghia, Orion Ghia, Scorpio Ghia, Mondeo Ghia, Focus Ghia) and the Brazilian Ford Del Rey Ghia but soon spread worldwide, particularly to the U.S, South American and Australian markets. In the British market, however, the practice of using the Ghia name in such a capacity was finally phased out in 2010. The 'Titanium' name has instead replaced Ghia as the flagship trim level. The British Ford Fiesta retained the Ghia trim designation for the longest amount of time of any model; for thirty-one-and-a-half years, uninterrupted, from February 1977 to November 2008. Today, the Ghia studios produce many various concept cars under the Ford banner. However, it will also forever be linked with Ford's top-line models. It has done 6161 miles in its first year without needing a service. It has great fuel consumption, although you must bear in mind that it is a diesel car, I almost forgot by trying to put unleaded in! For a diesel it is remarkable in that it makes less noise than my old Fiesta. If you are looking for a diesel with a smooth, powerful engine then this is the car for you!LOOKSIf you have not seen a Focus I doubt you are reading this. Basically you either love or hate the styling - it is very agressive at the front but a typical hatchback in that it is rounded at the back, not a good combination! It comes with fog lamps as standard, tinted windows and as an option a small spoiler on the back. Those who have read my review on the Rover 45 1.6 will know that I am a great fan of bodykits. For this reason I suggest that you buy the car first, without the styling options as there are a lot of after sales bodykit options available, for example the Monster bodykit or the Predator (both Japanese/American imports which look terrific for about £1000 - £2000 for a full kit with spoiler!) If you leave the car it can look a bit bland in lighter colours so I would suggest mettalic Black or 'Solar Red' (plain) this is because both of these enhance the 'aggressiveness' of the car. For Looks of the forecourt this car is satisfactory/average (although some people would disagree!) But add on the possibility of modifications and this car would rocket to a 'superb!' RELIABILITYWe have only had one problem with this car since purchase, one of the high beam headlamps stopped working. Considering that most of the driving is done at night this was a bit of a problem. The car seems to be able to take a lot of abuse (not that you would!) I was coming back from a conference with someone who notoriously drives fast (she owns turbo Golfs if that is an indication.) There were a few roundabouts on the way and the car took the rapid acceleration/de-celeration totally in its stride. Another consideration is that this car is used maybe nine days a month for long journeys and we have never had a complaint about non-starting etc and the reliability rating for this car is excellent!SAFETYI am able to help in this aspect, in that I have first hand experience of a Focus crash! I was walking on the pavement when two cars hit each other at about 30/40 head on. One was a new shape Ford Fiesta and the other was a Focus Hatchback (1.6L) The Focus had a crumpled bonnet but was drivable (and the driver was ok) whereas the Fiesta was a complete write off! The front end was probably crumpled the same as the Focus BUT the Focus has some sort of protection around the engine which gives it a bit of extra room on most other cars (another car like this is the Ford Puma/Cougar). It has all the normal features of modern cars such as pre-tensioners, Two airbags and ABS. On the downside is the fact that the Focus suffers from the typical curse of Ford which means that the bodywork is made of very shoddy materials which gives virtually no protection from the side. Be very wary of this - the Focus did not do too well at this in the NCAP safety tests 2001 (sorry I could not find later results!) This car will get a good for safety but it might be worth checking the NCAP results for last year!INSIDEThe car is quite spacious - it is quite wide and gives adequate room widthwise and certainly heightwise (something Ford ARE good at!) The best thing about it is the standard Ford CD player - which is a very good head unit in its own right (no need to buy other players!) The trim is good with a nicely curved fascia (think Ford Ka or Toyota Yaris.) The finish on our car is silver and looks really good with little bits of black scattered around (eg as the clock surround.) Most Focus' come as non smoking now so be prepared to not have a cigarrette lighter, instead a twelve volt power socket! It also has a couple of cup holders etc which really do improve the interior looks (as well as not having those aweful standard Ford Seats - these are sports seats and they make you FEEL comfortable!The big downside is the dashboard which could have come off any other Ford from 1985 onwards! The dash is nasty and orange, the dials all being squeezed in to fit as much as possible into a short space. Overall though the interior is very good, well laid out and no Ford Seats (the shapeless seats that you find in all 80/90's Fords!)HANDLINGFor a Car with a turbo kit the handling is abismal, it is very sluggish for a small car. You have to slow right down to to go round most bends - and do not even try to squeeze into a gap on the motorway - you might have an accident! It may have the acceleration but the power steering is a bit intermittent in that sometimes it works too well but in the main it is underpowered. I think the main problem is that they have left the power steering system on the 1.6 on the TDCI which is an absolute behemoth in comparison! This leads to a lot of under steer at high speeds and a lot of oversteer at low speeds. It is a bit daunting at first but is fine once you know its limits! Overall I would give handling a satisfactory becasue I have no complaints with the braking but the steering could be dangerous. SECURITY/CUSTOMER SERVICEI do not know a lot about either of these but suffice it to say that the Focus has a slightly complicated locking system in that you click the remote once to lock the car and once to alarm/immobilise it. It also has an ingenious device which opens the boot from the fob. For Customer Service I have not got a clue - I was not involved in the purchase and we have independant Servicers. I would just say that when I have been to Ford in the past they have been very helpful - although they would not let me 'borrow' a Ka convertible for the weekend! All in all I will give both of these sections an excellent based on first conceptions but do not take these as gospel truth!THANKSThank you for reading this review, I would urge anyone looking to buy a diesel to buy the TDCI because it gives the smoothest ride I have ever had in a diesel and is very economical. I have driven this car in London and on the M11 so I know that it deals with both very well! I would just urge you to take heed of the comments I have made about handling - especially if you are used to perfect steering! Focus 1.8 TDCi Ghia. After four years of great, trouble-free motoring with a 2002 version, I have been very disappointed with the changes that have been made. The driving position appears to be off-centre and uncomfortable - I seem to be sat at an angle all of the time no matter what I do with the seat and steering wheel. Not a problem I ever had with the old model. The driver's footwell is cramped and if ......your clutch foot against the moving steering column. Reversing is difficult - visibility is poor both through the rear screen and the wing mirrors. It is not that hot through the front either - the side pillars get in the way when you are trying to get out of a junction. For me, the new styling and extras (like automatic lights and self-dimming rear view mirror) add nothing to the car and are quite irritating. At this moment in time due to the car still being under warranty i will use factory parts though a pattern fuel filter will no doubt be used when the warranty expires! New scuttle cover / pollen filter cover was fitted, and anti-bacterial spray treatment applied - the cost was over £44.00. (Removal of the scuttle destroys the seal and it has to be replaced). As the car is less than 2 years old I suggested it should come under a warranty replacement. The dealer said I would have to take the issue up with Ford. This I did and the Ford customer service department stated they have no history of there being a problem with the Focus scuttle cover, the scuttle cover is part of the trim and is therefore not covered under any warrantee agreement, and they would not honour any refund to me. I said that I have the part that was removed and would be willing to send the part to them ...
