But that doesn’t stop these brands from having repeated cracks at this shrinking market. The numbers are worth chasing if the investment is spread across multiple models and you can tempt premium buyers by offering well kitted cars developed to the point of offering irresistible value. That’s the theory, at least. The new Ford Mondeo instantly offers value by providing more metal than your BMW 3-series as well as a level of finish, kit and sophistication that gets closer to what a BMW offers, for thousands less. It’s a combination that Ford hopes will at least allow the Mondeo to maintain its sales momentum, if not build on it. The original Mondeo replaced Ford’s Sierra, whose Citroën-esque styling initially proved a sales deterrent. The Sierra’s advanced looks hid rear-drive underpinnings that Ford abandoned with the front-drive Mondeo, which was also intended as a world car. It succeeded in Europe but not the US, despite gathering a fine reputation for handling, sophistication and convenience, if not style. The 2000 version was better looking and still more sophisticated, but never crossed the Atlantic, and neither will this 2007 edition, despite its greater size. That mascot of New Labour was outgrowing his stereotyping by the time the second-generation Ford Mondeo arrived in 2000, and such is the fragmentation of both the car market and society since then that he may no longer exist. People don't buy so many mainstream-badged big cars any more; they want BMWs or SUVs or MPVs. So, Mondeo car has moved with the times. The new, third-generation one does again what the last one did relative to the first one: it's bigger, roomier, better to drive, more "premium" in its ambience. More than ever, Ford is hoping to lure buyers away from those brands (mainly German) that are perceived to make higher-status cars, taking advantage of the fact that the mainstream/premium apartheid exists much more in buyers' minds than it does in reality. The days of huge sales to fleets, of flooding the daily rental market, are over because there isn't enough money in it. This Mondeo is designed more than ever to appeal to private buyers, who will get a car as good as any premium product but at a lower cost. Hopeless dream or a strategy with a fighting chance? We'll find out in a minute. Ford is not particularly worried that sales of Mondeo-type cars are shrinking, because the new Mondeo shares most of its underpinnings with the S-Max (a roaring success, with half of them sold to people who haven't previously owned a Ford) and the Galaxy. All three ranges are made in the same Belgian factory, Europe's largest, and production volumes can be altered to meet demand for each range. And this time, there's no Mondeo LX. This last, range-bottoming survivor of the old letter-badge hierarchy is consigned to history. There'll be no poverty-spec new Mondeo. "We won't sell any Mondeo you wouldn't be proud to own," says Ford of Britain chairman Roelant de Waard. Ghia is still around, though, along with Edge, Zetec and the range-topping Titanium X. Being based on a platform shared with MPVs, the Mondeo is a wide car, both outside and in. But it hides its bulk well with the latest interpretation of Ford's "kinetic design" as propounded by design director Martin Smith (late of General Motors Europe, once of Audi). Fords had become safe-looking, sober and overly functional, he felt, which undersold the fact that today's Fords really are among the best cars in their classes to drive. The Mondeo is meant to look like a car that will please its driver; the design is intended to evoke movement and power. Which it does, broadly, thanks to the emphasised wheel arches, the big air-intake low in the front valance and the kicked-up rear waistline. The Mondeo might not be beautiful but it is striking in all three of its body styles, of which the hatchback and the four-door saloon (the latter likely to account for just 4 per cent of UK sales) are harder to tell apart than ever before. I was far from convinced about the Mondeo look when the range was revealed at the Geneva show, and rued the disappearance of the Ford signature oval grille with its angle-chopped ends, but having seen production-quality cars out in the open, I've come to like it. That new "face", seen also on the revised Focus C-Max, will be the face of future Fords, with the relative sizes of grille, lower intake and headlights altered to suit the model. "I want them to be instantly recognisable as Fords," stresses Smith, "but people must be able to tell them apart." Unlike the faces of Audis, or Mercedes-Benzes, he could have added. Inside, too, it's better than I first thought. It didn't help that the Geneva car that was open for access had ghastly fake-wood Ghia trim. Smith hates it, too, but some customers like it and real wood is far too expensive - it would add around £700 to the Ghia's price. The Zetec Mondeos have a glossy crisscross pattern in grey, hinting at carbon fibre, and it looks much more technical and modern. The top-range Titanium X cars have a brushed-aluminium look, a little too redolent of a cheap DVD player but pleasant enough. All have plenty of padded, soft-touch surfaces, albeit not as many as you'd find in a true "premium" car, and unlike in the old car, the windscreen pillars are cloth-covered, albeit cheaply. Rear seat space is terrific, be it for shoulders, legs or heads, and there's plenty of storage. There's the usual plethora of airbags, too, including a knee-bag for the driver. It's looking good for showroom appeal, and Ford promises a "precision drive". But will the promise be kept out on the road? Right. I can't keep this back any longer. To drive, the new Mondeo is truly, groundbreakingly, class-leadingly terrific. Rash words? Not at all: it feels right within 50 yards, and then gets better and better. It's not often we can be so unequivocally enthusiastic about a new car, especially one designed to be a family car with all the compromises that entails, and given today's legislative strictures on car design. But there it is, and the premium brands had better take notice, for the Mondeo's easy flow and smooth, refined pace are not just up to standard, they set the standard. An ultra-rigid body shell is central to this, and over twice as stiff as the outgoing Mondeo's. It's why the new Mondeo steers accurately and faithfully, with an agility and interactivity that make it feel smaller than it is, yet also rides over bumps breathtakingly well. There are no jolts over road craters, just gentle thuds. And road roar from coarse surfaces is quiet and distant, even in the back of the estate car, thanks to clever, fluid-filled suspension mountings. I've already praised the Ford S-Max in these pages, but if there's a fault it is the firm ride that results from making a tall car agile. The Mondeo is not tall, so it doesn't need to be firm: all the advantages, none of the disadvantages. I've driven two different engines, all the body styles and three different suspension specifications, beginning with the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged unit made by Volvo and delivering 220bhp. Few are predicted to buy this range-topping version, but it's the one most likely to tempt owners of German premium cars away from their comfort zone. It's smooth, tuneful, quiet and has a crisp, eager response. This is a 152mph Mondeo able to reach 62mph in 7.5 seconds; imagine time-travelling back to 1962 and trying to explain that to the driver of a new Cortina. The other engine I've sampled is the 2.0-litre turbo diesel, built by Peugeot-Citroën and matched, like the 2.5 turbo, to a six-speed transmission (automatics will follow). This 140bhp unit hauls the circa-1,400kg Mondeo with its usual ease; you can't escape its diesel voice but it's never intrusive. One of the 2.5s I tried had firmer Sport suspension and 18in wheels, which sharpened the steering and handling but - miraculously - retained a supple, fluid ride. There's also an adaptive-dampers option, which lets you select comfort, normal or sport settings; it works well but the standard suspensions are so good that this option is superfluous. Other engines are 1.6, 2.0 and - later - 2.3-litre petrol units, plus 1.8 and lower-power 2.0 diesels. And there are various computer and multimedia systems on offer, using mobile-phone-like four-way buttons on the steering wheel and, in top versions, an excellent colour menu screen. Let me finish, though, with the fuel filler. There's no cap, because it seals automatically when the nozzle is removed. And a clever design of spring-loaded tabs around the circumference ensures you can never put petrol in a diesel Mondeo. If the tabs aren't displaced, the narrower petrol nozzle doesn't go in. Looks like they've thought of everything. THE RIVALS Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi 150 from £18,235 A recent face-lift turned a dullard into a fine driving car, but the boxy Vectra is showing its age now. The next-generation one is likely to be quite a looker. Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI from £17,475 Is it a "premium" car? Not really, because VW had to distance it from Audi. Lots of technology, competent, but aloof to drive. You'll enjoy the Mondeo more. Peugeot 407 2.0 HDi 136 from £17,450 Virtually the same engine as the Mondeo, the striking styling is spoilt by an over-long nose, but the 407 doesn't flow with its driver like the Ford. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: New Reviews Ford Mondeo The latest Mondeo is the best family car money can buy. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £17,795 - £25,895 For : Rewarding road manners, truly supple, low running costs, huge interior, versatile load bay Against : Sheer exterior dimensions, residuals unimpressive, fussy styling DrivingAll-round refinement is definitely a Mondeo strong point. No rival cruises as comfortably at high speeds or deals with coarse surfaces so well. It even delivers a cosseting ride around town. We tested a model fitted with Ford’s Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control (IVDC) electronic dampers. In short, it feels unflappable thanks to its awesome suspension control, which in turn inspires confidence. It slices through corners, the steering is light yet extremely accurate, and unlike some rivals, it never feels heavy or cumbersome – quite an achievement given the hefty 1,615kg kerbweight of the test car. And impressively, even models without the electronic suspension are able to provide a similarly class-leading drive. However, that hefty weight means that, while the best-selling 2.0 TDCI 140 has competitive power and torque, it doesn’t have particularly meaty mid-range response or crispness. Nor is the four-cylinder unit the last word in smoothness or noise suppression. As you’d perhaps expect, cheaper 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre petrol versions require far more work, making them similarly intrusive. Mind you, on the move, the engines are only noticeable because there is barely a trace of wind or road noise.MarketplaceThe striking Mondeo is certainly dramatic to look at, although the ‘Kinetic Design’ styling that has attracted so much attention isn’t as cutting-edge in reality as we’d expected. Overall, we think it comes across as slightly fussy. Ford has gone overboard on the detailing, resulting in a car that looks as if it’s wearing too much make-up. But the main thing that will strike people when they first see the Mondeo is the size. It’s huge – wider and taller than a BMW 5-Series, and only 60mm shorter. It still competes against familiar rivals, such as the Vauxhall Vectra, Renault Laguna, Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat and Peugeot 407, though it is premium models like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Saab 9-3 that are arguably this car’s fiercest rivals. Ford will be hoping a vast choice of engines, three bodystyles and four trims will swing the balance: the line-up consists of nearly 100 unique models!OwningNo rival can match the Ford for space or versatility inside. Its load bay is cavernous and the rear cabin palatial. The interior itself is sporting and futuristic, characterised by swept-back A-pillars and shallow angles. But once you open the heavy doors and settle into the equally spacious driving environment, you realise that, once again, Ford has overdone the glitz, while letting some things slip through the net, too. The speedo increments are hard to read, the seat doesn’t go low enough, stowage isn’t well organised on the centre console and overall it doesn’t quite give off the impression of quality a VW Passat does. We do like the screen mounted between the dials though, easily controlled by steering wheel-mounted buttons. However, drivers won’t like the economy – during three tankfuls, we failed to top 40mpg in the 2.0 TDCi, while emissions place it in a higher company car tax band than its key rivals. The 2.0-litre petrol was even worse, averaging just 28.2mpg. Retained values are unimpressive for such a new car, too: under 38 per cent is a full 10 per cent down on Honda’s excellent Accord. At least running costs are impressive, thanks to keen servicing prices from Ford’s vast UK dealer network.
