1955 MK1 FORD ZEPHYR SIX FARNHAM ESTATE EXCEEDINGLY RARE
.
| 1955 MK1 FORD ZEPHYR SIX ESTATE, 00U 827 | This car is one of the very rare surviving Mk1 estates by Abbotts of Farnham and this is the only known surviving...>
Mk1 Zephyr estate in the UK. | It is believed that around 800 were built, with 500 of these being exported. The Owners’ Club currently believe there are a total of 10 of these cars left in the world. The last tax disc before restoration appears on the windscreen and the car has been roadworthy again since 1986. | The car has covered an estimated 116, 000 miles. The conversion from saloon to estate by Abbotts was crude but strong. The dimple in the roof, coupled with considerable cross-bracing means that a man can stand on the rubbing strips within the roof rack with no fear of damaging the roof. The extra windows and space give the car an airier feel than the saloon, and the extra weight over the rear wheels improves handling. | During restoration, the car received original new Ford parts for sills, jacking points, driver’s door, inner and outer front wings, lower rear wings, front panel, grille and bonnet. New floors were manufactured and fitted. The rear fifth door was re-manufactured to a very high standard by O & A Boa, of Hucknall. | It took 28 man-hours to fit the 4 window channels, winding gear, door locks and window trims on the four side doors. The seat frames are original but the leather covers are new. These and the headlining required several weeks of work, the headlining being “extremely difficult” according to a trimmer expert. Abbotts used to fit non-Ford headlining, adopting a belt and braces approach of glue and clamps. Trim panels were fitted in different ways on the two sides of the car. The rear seat was a reworked saloon seat, and, despite Abbott’s efforts, not the best design for an estate. Re-trimming was done to an excellent standard by Howard Buchanan of Finedon, Northants. | This year (2011) we have completely overhauled the braking system, it has had new brake shoes front and rear, new hydraulic wheel cylinder seals, front and rear flexible brake hoses, the brake drums have been skimmed, a new fuel pump and four new white-wall tyres. | Further points to note; this car is fitted with various period accessories, the all-metal sun visor and chrome hunting lamp, original tow bar and original valve radio all working perfectly. Four years ago, the car was subject to a bare metal re-spray in the original Canterbury Green at the same time the opportunity was taken to refurbish the chrome, the car was fitted with new bespoke carpets and rare nos `Kumficar` leopard print seat covers finishing the car to a very high standard. | The car was invited to the `100 years of Ford Motoring` at the Goodwood Revival September 2011 and took part in the daily parade around the circuit (great fun!). | Classic Car magazine has stated that the Mk1 estate was probably the car that saved Abbotts of Farnham from going out of business. | Performance is similar to that of the Zephyr saloon, 0-60mph is about 20 seconds, top speed about 85mph or so in overdrive and around 25-27mpg fuel consumption. The overdrive has a freewheel system with clutch less gear changes at town speeds under 30mph and an automatic up change or kick down into and out of overdrive – a very advanced system for its time. | I Would be interested in part-exchange with British Competition motorcycle (pre-65 Trials i.e. Norton, Ariel, Douglas, AJS, BSA, etc). | For further details call Simon 07768 725 646 | X
